The shocking story of how David Choe was s*xually assaulted comes up again, bringing attention to a beef actor dispute. Allegations against Choe have been brought up again because of new information. This has led to a new round of public scrutiny and questions about accountability in the entertainment business.
Beef Actor Controversy Explained
The show’s creator and lead actors have spoken out in response to the recent issue surrounding co-star David Choe, who was criticized for a r@pe story he told on a podcast nine years ago. The statement from the show’s executive producers, including Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, and Lee Sung-jin, was published in Vanity Fair on 21 April 2023.
“The story David Choe fabricated nine years ago is undeniably hurtful and extremely disturbing. We do not condone this story in any way and we understand why this has been so upsetting and triggering,” they said.
In addition, they stated
“We’re aware David has apologized in the past for making up this horrific story, and we’ve seen him put in the work to get the mental health support he needed over the last decade to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”
Beef, which premiered on Netflix on April 6, quickly rose to the number two spot on the service’s list of most popular English-language programs. Choe, a 46-year-old artist, portrays a criminally-inclined agitator.
He quipped that he was a “successful r@pist” and detailed an encounter with a masseuse in which he engaged in multiple s*xual actions that were not mutually consented to. His podcast was “a complete extension of his art” as a storyteller and artist, he said in response to accusations that he was a r@pist.
He said: “I never thought I’d wake up one late afternoon and hear myself called a r@pist. It sucks. Especially because I am not one. I am not a rapist. I hate r@pists, I think rapists should be r@ped and mu*dered. If I am guilty of anything, it’s bad storytelling in the style of douche.”
In 2017, he admitted that it took him three years of therapy and rehabilitation before he could apologize again, saying, “I have zero history of s*xual assault. I am deeply sorry for any hurt I’ve brought to anyone through my past words.”
