Big Pokey, real name Melvin Powell, was a veteran Houston rapper who collapsed onstage in Beaumont, Texas on Saturday(17 June 2023) night and later d!ed. The cause of his de@th at age 45 remains unknown.
In the footage, Big Pokey gasps for air mid-song and collapses to the floor. After a nurse in the crowd had given him CPR, he was rushed to the hospital shortly after midnight. Soon after, he p@ssed away.

Big Pokey and his band Screw up Click are widely regarded as an early innovator in Houston’s hip-hop community. The release of his debut solo album, “The Hardest Pit in the Litter,” in 1999 catapulted him to stardom. Since then, he has released a slew of solo efforts and collaborative projects, the most recent of which was 2021’s “Sensei.”
On Sunday night, Big Pokey’s official Instagram account posted the following “in loving memory of” statement:
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the p@ssing of our beloved Milton ‘Big Pokey’ Powell. Big Pokey p@ssed away on June 18, 2023. He was well-loved by his family, his friends, and his loyal fans. In the coming days, we will release information about his celebration of life and how the public can pay their respects. We ask that you respect his family and their privacy during this difficult time. Big Pokey will forever be ‘The Hardest Pit in the Litter.’”
In a Facebook post, Pour 09 Bar said, “We would like everyone to pray to Big Pokey and his family. Out of respect for those involved, we will not be commenting on the incident to allow his family and friends ample time to mourn and make a statement when they are ready. This is a tragedy that no one expected and only our prayers go out to his family and friends.”
