This year, though, the lead-up to the main event has been saddened by the de@th of a seventh horse at Churchill Downs. In the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby, two more horses have perished at Churchill Downs. Injuries sustained by 3-year-olds Chloe’s Dream (a gelding) and Freezing Point (a colt) during undercard races resulted in their euthanasia, as reported by the Associated Press.

In the words of Sportsyahoo.com, In the days running up to the 2023 Kentucky Derby, seven horses had d!ed at Churchill Downs. Wild on Ice and Take Charge Briana were among the other horses that had to be put down while racing or training in the days leading up to the Derby.

Two of Saffie Joseph Jr.’s horses unexpectedly d!ed as the Derby neared. On Saturday(6 May 2023), Churchill Downs terminated Joseph Jr.’s employment. The penalty forced Joseph Jr. to withdraw his other Derby contender, Lord Miles.

The Derby field is down to only Forte after four other horses, including the odds-on favorite, were forced to withdraw. The other three horses pulled from the race were Continuar, Practical Move, and Skinner.
