Who is Kevin Cronin?
American singer-songwriter Kevin Patrick Cronin was born on October 6, 1951. He fronts the rock band REO Speedwagon as lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and keyboards. The band had several hits in the 1970s and 1980s, with Cronin penning two of the most successful tracks, “Keep on Loving You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”
Cronin was born and raised in the Illinois suburbs of Chicago. He was born in Evanston, Illinois, but spent much of his childhood in the nearby neighborhood of Oak Lawn, where he learned to play the guitar. He attended the Catholic elementary school of St. Linus. He graduated from Chicago’s Brother Rice High School.
Kevin Cronin’s Career Journey
Soon after the recording of their self-titled debut album in 1971 was over, Cronin joined REO Speedwagon. He worked on one album with them before leaving because of scheduling conflicts and creative differences. Cronin rejoined the band in 1976 after a brief stint as a solo artist.
Cronin returned to the band after Greg X. Volz, a Christian, turned down the lead vocal position. While their fame peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the band continued to release new songs well into the 2000s, including the album Find Your Own Way Home.
Their best-known album, Hi Infidelity, has sold over 10 million copies. According to Cronin, they don’t get paid to play but do get reimbursed for expenses.
