Is Joey Chestnut Injured at Nathan Hot Dog Eating Contest?
Burger-eating phenomenon To win his 15th Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut wolfed down 63 hot dogs and buns on Monday. After missing last year’s frank fest because she was pregnant, women’s record holder Miki Sudo made a triumphant return this year and ate 40 wieners and buns to win the women’s title.
The tournament was briefly interrupted by a fan dressed as Darth Vader who rushed the stage. Before contest officials could quickly remove the intruder, Chestnut held him in a brief chokehold.

Another protester, this one wearing a white stormtrooper mask, had crept up behind the rivals and been holding up a banner that read, “Expose Smithfield’s Deathstar.” Smithfield is the producer of the renowned Nathan’s hotdogs. Chestnut, unfazed by the scuffle, resumed his original plan, which was to eat more hot dogs.
On Monday, the competition returned to its usual spot in front of Nathan’s original storefront in Brooklyn’s Coney Island district. In 2020 and in 2019, the event had to be moved because of the coronavirus epidemic.
After his feat, which the 38-year-old accomplished despite sporting a surgical boot due to a leg ailment, Chestnut told, “It’s beautiful to be back here.”
“It hurts, but I was in the zone for a little bit. I was ignoring it,” said Chestnut, but that it gradually slowed him down during the 10-minute race. The Westfield, Indiana native ate 76 hot dogs and buns in one sitting last year, breaking his personal record from the year before.
Many betting sites, including FanDuel and DraftKings, refunded wagers placed on the over/under of 74.5 hot dogs, despite having made Chestnut the betting favorite.
Tampa, Florida’s Sudo broke the women’s record in 2020 with 48 12 wieners and buns, and she took off in 2019 to have her first child. Max Wehry was born on July 8, 2021, to her and Nick Wehry, a fellow competitive eater she met at Nathan’s event in 2018. The infant was held by his father as she (at age 36) won her eighth Nathan’s competition.
She later told that she hoped he would learn a lesson from it, also she said:
“I want to set an example to do things that you love and push yourself to your absolute limits and, when things get difficult, to still give it a try, “And, you know, you might actually just come out victorious.”

After that, Sudo became the primary caregiver for the children while Wehry competed for the male title. Nathan’s gives away one hundred thousand franks to the New York City Food Bank in honor of the event.

Joey Chestnut Injured Before Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest
Joey Chestnut, arguably the best competitive eater in history, faces a tough test on Monday at Coney Island. Even though Chestnut has a ruptured tendon in his leg, he plans to compete in this year’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut used crutches to get to Friday’s official weigh-in for the tournament, but he says the injury won’t slow him down.

“I’m gonna eat like a madman,” Chestnut told. “It’s all right. I’ll be able to stand up and eat. I’m excited.” On Monday, Chestnut will compete, and he has a chance to set a new world record. He ate 60 plus hot dogs in under 10 minutes last year, setting a new world record.
At 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time in 2022, the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest will begin. Before Chestnut performs, there will be a women’s competition.
